Batres Prepares Political Moves in Mexico City for 2027 Elections

Despite his federal post, ISSSTE Director Martí Batres is strengthening his position in Mexico City's politics. He is lobbying for his allies to be mayoral candidates in Álvaro Obregón and Coyoacán, facing a growing rift with Head of Government Clara Brugada. Intra-party ambitions and the 2027 elections are at the center of the political battle in the capital.

Batres Prepares Political Moves in Mexico City for 2027 Elections

Martí Batres, the director of ISSSTE, is again backing the local deputy Gerardo Villanueva, as he did in previous elections. A few weeks ago, Villanueva presented his management report alongside key political figures, including Daniela Cordero, the director of the Mexico City-based Fondeso and Batres's wife. To these challenges is added the growing distance between Batres and the current head of government, Clara Brugada. In one instance, for example, the current director of ISSSTE demanded that his political group lead the mayoral tickets for Álvaro Obregón and Coyoacán, two demarcations he has had his eye on for some time. With a similar project, Brugada congratulated Zohran Mamdani on his victory in New York. It is no secret that Martí Batres seeks the mayorship of Álvaro Obregón for his sister and current local deputy, Valentina Batres, and Coyoacán for his ally and also capital deputy, Gerardo Villanueva. This news outlet reported this in 2023, before last year's elections, in which, just as now, then-head of government attempted to secure power quotas to maintain influence and structure in the country's most important city. In any case, there are already other teams registered for that position, such as those linked to local deputy Fernando Zárate or the newly appointed Magistrate of the Superior Court of the Federal Administrative Justice Tribunal, Eduardo Santillán. Aleida insists on her partner's candidacy, and in Morena they believe she could negotiate with the Green Party. For its part, Coyoacán also does not seem secure, although in Batres's team they assure that the ruling party 'owes' them after letting Hannah de Lamadrid pass in last year's elections. At that time, he did not succeed, so now he is back at it. In any case, Batres's strategy faces some problems. The first is that Álvaro Obregón is already governed by Morena under the current mayor, Javier López Casarín, who could seek re-election if the party finally allows it. In this sense, as LPO was able to learn, he has already demanded internally the right to lead the mayoral tickets for Álvaro Obregón and Coyoacán in 2027. At least three sources from the 'guinda' (red) party told LPO that a few days ago a meeting was held on Tajín Street in the Narvarte Poniente neighborhood, where important figures from the 4T—both federal and local—began to map out political aspirations and ambitions for the 2027 elections. Although the first was one of the main operators of his campaign, in recent months some political and electoral differences—especially in the judicial sphere—have generated a gap between both figures that, for now, is not known how it will impact 2027. The director of ISSSTE, Martí Batres, left Mexico City in the company of President Claudia Sheinbaum to take on federal responsibilities. In any case, the director of ISSSTE is already thinking about these elections and begins to move his pieces. However, the former head of government maintains his political ambitions in the capital, where he aspires to maintain important power quotas.
